Coolant level dropping with no obvious puddle? See the common external and internal leak possibilities and why hot, pressurised leaks can be difficult to spot.

Coolant can escape without leaving an obvious puddle. Small leaks may only occur when the system is hot and pressurised, while some coolant can evaporate on hot engine components before reaching the ground.

Details that help narrow it down

  • How quickly is the coolant level falling?
  • Any sweet smell after driving?
  • Does the temperature gauge rise above normal?
  • Any dried coloured residue around hoses, radiator or water pump?

Common external leak areas

Radiator seams, hose joints, thermostat housings, expansion-tank caps, water pumps and heater-system connections are common places to inspect. Dried coolant residue can sometimes identify a leak that is not active when the engine is cold.

When an internal leak is considered

Persistent coolant loss with no external source can lead to checks for internal engine leakage. White exhaust vapour after warm-up, contamination in fluids, cooling-system pressurisation or repeated overheating can add context, but none of these signs alone should be used to diagnose a head gasket.

Why repeated topping-up is not a fix

A falling coolant level means the system needs investigation. Allowing the engine to run low on coolant can cause overheating and turn a smaller leak into much more expensive engine damage.
