An amber engine-management light can appear even when the vehicle seems to drive normally. Modern engine control systems monitor emissions, sensors, fuelling and ignition closely, so they can detect a problem before the driver notices a major change.
Some faults are intermittent, affect emissions more than performance or are compensated for by the engine control unit. Stored fault codes and live data usually provide a better starting point than guessing a component from the warning light alone.
Possible areas include oxygen sensors, air measurement, ignition misfires, fuel mixture, EGR systems, DPF systems and boost control. The code describes what the control unit detected; it does not automatically prove the named sensor or component has failed.
A steady amber warning often allows time for diagnosis, but a flashing engine-management light can indicate an active fault such as a severe misfire that may damage the catalytic converter. If the vehicle is running badly, losing power significantly or displaying red warnings as well, treat it more cautiously.
