The timing belt, often called a cambelt, keeps the crankshaft and camshaft synchronised. Replacement is usually a scheduled maintenance job rather than something to wait for until symptoms appear.
On many engines the water pump is driven by, or sits behind, the timing-belt system. Replacing it while the belt is already removed can avoid paying much of the same labour again later. The exact arrangement depends on the engine.
