What does P0401 mean?

P0401 means the ECU requested exhaust-gas recirculation but detected less EGR flow than expected. The restriction or control problem can be in the valve, passages, pipework, sensors or the system used to operate the valve.

Common causes

  • Sticking or failed EGR valve
  • Vacuum or actuator-control fault

Is the EGR valve always the problem?

No. A valve can be working while a blocked passage prevents the expected gas flow, and sensor faults can make correct flow appear incorrect. Diagnosis should confirm the commanded valve movement and the system response before parts are replaced.

Why does carbon build up?

Soot from exhaust gas combines with oil vapour in the intake and can gradually restrict EGR passages and valves. The rate varies by engine design, driving pattern and the condition of other emissions components.

What should be tested?

Depending on the vehicle, useful checks can include commanded versus actual EGR position, airflow changes when EGR is activated, vacuum supply, differential-pressure readings and physical inspection for blockage.

Could cleaning fix P0401?

Cleaning can help when carbon restriction is confirmed and the component is serviceable, but it will not fix failed electronics, damaged actuators or an underlying engine problem that is creating excessive deposits.
