What does P0299 mean?

P0299 means the ECU has detected less boost pressure than expected from the turbocharger or supercharger system under the conditions in which the fault was recorded.

Common causes

  • Split or loose boost hose
  • Intercooler leak
  • Wastegate or variable-vane control problem
  • Vacuum-control leak on applicable systems
  • Boost or pressure-sensor fault
  • Turbocharger wear or damage
  • Exhaust or EGR-related fault affecting boost control

Possible symptoms

  • Loss of power
  • Limp mode
  • Engine management light
  • Poor acceleration
  • Whistling or hissing if a pressure hose is leaking
  • Smoke may occur when another air or fuelling fault is present

Does P0299 mean the turbo needs replacing?

No. A failed turbo is one possible cause, but leaking boost pipework, intercoolers, actuators, vacuum controls and sensors can all prevent the measured boost from reaching the requested value. Checking the cheaper external causes first can avoid an unnecessary turbo replacement.

What live data is useful?

Comparing commanded or target boost with measured boost under controlled conditions helps confirm the underboost pattern. Sensor plausibility, actuator position and airflow data can add context, although the exact data available varies by vehicle.

What physical checks matter?

Inspect boost hoses and intercooler connections for splits, loose clips and oil mist around a leak. Turbo shaft condition, actuator movement and vacuum supply may then be checked according to the engine design.

Why can the car enter limp mode?

If requested boost cannot be controlled reliably, the ECU may reduce engine output to protect the engine and emissions system. Cycling the ignition can sometimes temporarily restore power, but it does not repair the cause.
