Car in limp mode: common causes

Understand why a car can enter limp mode, what fault codes can reveal and why clearing the warning is not the same as fixing the cause.

Limp mode is a protective strategy used by many vehicle control systems when a fault could affect engine, transmission or emissions operation. The vehicle deliberately limits performance to reduce risk of further damage or unsafe behaviour.

Common systems involved

Boost control, DPF loading, EGR faults, air-flow measurement, throttle control, transmission faults and sensor plausibility problems can all trigger restricted performance depending on the vehicle.

Why restarting can appear to fix it

Some faults are intermittent and the control unit may restore normal performance after a restart until the fault happens again. That does not mean the underlying problem has disappeared.
