A car that runs at a normal temperature on an open road but gets hot in stationary or slow-moving traffic gives an important diagnostic clue: road speed is providing airflow that the cooling system is struggling to replace when the vehicle stops. That often shifts attention toward radiator fan operation and low-speed heat rejection, but coolant level, circulation and system pressure still need checking.
Cooling fan and airflow faults
At road speed, air is naturally pushed through the radiator. In traffic, an electric cooling fan normally provides that airflow when coolant temperature or air-conditioning demand requires it. A failed fan motor, fuse, relay, control module, temperature input or damaged wiring can therefore create an overheating pattern that is much worse at low speed. A blocked or externally obstructed radiator can also reduce heat transfer.
Why it is not always just the fan
Low coolant, trapped air, a thermostat that is not opening correctly, poor water-pump circulation or a pressurisation problem can also appear differently at different speeds and loads. Cabin-heater behaviour is useful evidence: heat that suddenly goes cold while engine temperature rises can suggest loss of coolant flow or low coolant. Bubbling, repeated coolant loss or coolant being pushed out needs prompt physical investigation rather than repeated topping-up.
Useful checks before parts are replaced
A garage can confirm actual coolant temperature with scan data, command or observe fan operation, check fan power and control, inspect radiator condition, pressure-test the cooling system and assess thermostat and water-pump circulation. The aim is to prove why heat is not being removed rather than automatically replacing the radiator or thermostat. Never open a pressurised cooling system while it is hot.
Clues that help narrow it down
- • Does the temperature rise mainly below about 15 mph or while stationary?
- • Can you hear or see the radiator fan operating when hot?
- • Does switching the air conditioning on trigger the fan?
- • Does the cabin heater stay hot or suddenly turn cold?
- • Is coolant being lost, bubbling or pushed out?
Safety and inspection guidance
If the temperature enters the red, a stop warning appears, coolant is boiling or steam is visible, stop safely and allow the engine to cool. Repeated overheating can cause major engine damage. Have the cooling system inspected by a qualified mechanic before relying on the vehicle.
