What does P2002 mean?

P2002 means the ECU has determined that diesel particulate filter performance on Bank 1 is below the expected threshold. The judgement is usually based on pressure and operating data rather than a direct measurement of filter condition alone.

Common causes

  • Loaded or ash-saturated DPF
  • Differential-pressure sensor or hose fault
  • Exhaust leak affecting pressure readings
  • Failed or incomplete regeneration
  • Exhaust-temperature sensor fault
  • Engine, EGR or boost fault creating excessive soot

Does P2002 mean the DPF must be replaced?

No. A blocked or damaged filter is one possibility, but sensor faults, pressure-hose problems, exhaust leaks and repeated failed regenerations can all produce DPF efficiency faults. The cause of excessive soot also matters before any new filter is fitted.

What should be checked before regeneration?

Fault codes, calculated soot load, differential pressure, exhaust temperatures and regeneration history should be reviewed. If another engine fault prevents safe regeneration, repeatedly trying to force one can waste time or create additional risk.

Why can the warning keep returning after cleaning?

If a thermostat, EGR system, injector, boost fault or driving pattern is causing poor regeneration or excess soot, cleaning the filter treats the result rather than the cause. The DPF can then load again quickly.

What is soot versus ash?

Soot can normally be burned during regeneration. Ash is non-combustible residue that accumulates over the filter's life and cannot be removed by normal regeneration. Service information and measured data help determine which problem is more likely.
