What does P0087 mean?

P0087 means measured fuel-rail or fuel-system pressure fell below the level the ECU expected. On direct-injection petrol and common-rail diesel engines this can involve both low-pressure supply and high-pressure components.

Why is P0087 more than a fuel-pump code?

Modern systems can have a tank or lift pump feeding a mechanically driven high-pressure pump, plus regulators, sensors and injectors. Low measured rail pressure therefore needs system-level testing rather than assuming one pump has failed.

What data should be compared?

Requested and actual rail pressure during cranking, idle and load can show when pressure falls behind demand. Low-side supply pressure, filter condition and injector leak-off may then be checked depending on the system.

Is DIY high-pressure fuel testing safe?

High-pressure direct-injection and common-rail diesel systems can operate at pressures capable of penetrating skin and causing serious injury. Do not loosen high-pressure pipes to test for fuel. Use manufacturer procedures and suitable diagnostic equipment.

Can a sensor cause the code?

Yes. A biased pressure sensor or wiring fault can report pressure incorrectly, but that should be demonstrated with plausibility checks rather than used as a reason to ignore a genuine low-pressure condition.
