Motorcycle clicking or clunking noise at low speed

A motorcycle clicking, clunking or snatching below about 15 mph may be wheel-, brake- or drivetrain-related rather than engine noise. See which clues help narrow it down.

Low-speed motorcycle noises are useful diagnostically because you can often separate a problem that follows wheel and road speed from one that follows engine revs. A clicking, clunking or repeating sensation below roughly 15 mph can come from the chain and sprockets, cush drive, brakes, wheel bearings, tyre or loose fittings as well as engine or gearbox components. The location and what changes the symptom matter more than the sound name alone.

Does it follow road speed or engine revs?

A noise that repeats faster as the motorcycle moves faster, even when engine revs are not changing in the same way, places more attention on rotating road-speed components such as tyres, wheels, brakes and final drive. A symptom that clearly changes when the engine is revved while stationary points more toward engine, exhaust or bodywork vibration. Do not perform a risky road test just to answer this question; use behaviour you have already noticed during normal riding.

Chain, sprocket and cush-drive clues

Uneven chain slack, tight spots, hooked sprocket teeth or excessive final-drive free play can be especially noticeable when setting off or moving slowly on and off the throttle. A worn cush drive can create a dull jerk or clunk as drive is taken up. Correct chain tension varies by motorcycle, so adjustment should follow the manufacturer's procedure rather than making the chain as tight as possible.

Brakes, wheels and loose fittings

A repeating scrape or click that changes when the front or rear brake is applied needs brake and wheel inspection. Wheel-bearing roughness, a brake disc or pad issue, debris near the disc, or a sticking caliper can all create low-speed symptoms. Exhaust heat shields, stands, fairings and number-plate brackets can also rattle or click over bumps without being an internal engine problem.

Clues that help narrow it down

  • Walking pace, 5–15 mph, or present at all speeds?
  • Front wheel, rear wheel/chain, middle of bike or engine/exhaust area?
  • Does it follow road speed or engine revs?
  • Does opening/closing the throttle change it?
  • Does either brake, turning or a bump change it?

Safety and inspection guidance

Motorcycle wheel, brake, steering and final-drive faults can become safety-critical. Stop riding if there is wheel play, brake binding, instability, severe chain wear or anything that could detach or contact the wheel.
