MOT corrosion wording can sound alarming because the test is concerned with structural strength rather than surface appearance. Corrosion near certain load-bearing or mounting areas can affect how safely forces are carried through the body or chassis.

Why does the 30cm area matter?

The MOT inspection pays particular attention to prescribed structural areas around important mountings and load-bearing components. Rust in these areas is judged by its effect on strength, not simply by whether it looks untidy.

Surface rust versus structural corrosion

Light surface corrosion is different from metal that is perforated, substantially weakened or no longer securely supporting a mounting. The tester's wording and the exact location are important when deciding what repair is required.

What does a proper repair involve?

Structural corrosion normally needs sound metal to be restored using an appropriate permanent repair. Covering rust with filler, underseal or cosmetic material does not restore structural strength. A body repairer or competent welding specialist can assess the extent once trim, coatings or loose corrosion are removed.
