Where ABS is fitted and required to be checked, the malfunction indicator must behave correctly. A warning that stays on can indicate the system has detected a fault and disabled anti-lock assistance.
Wheel-speed sensors, reluctor rings or magnetic encoders, wiring, connectors, power supply and the ABS control unit are all possible causes. The warning lamp alone cannot identify which one has failed.
An ABS fault does not necessarily mean the hydraulic service brakes have stopped working, but the anti-lock function may be unavailable. The warning still needs diagnosis.
ABS fault codes and live wheel-speed data can often narrow the affected corner or circuit. Visual inspection and electrical testing should then confirm the cause.
