Labour is the swing factor. The gearbox has to come out on most cars, so the hours barely change with the price of the parts — but the hourly rate does, and that is what makes the same job cost noticeably more in London than in Wales.

Signs your clutch is actually worn

• Revs rise but the car does not pull harder — classic slip, usually under load uphill.
• The biting point has crept up towards the top of the pedal travel.
• A burning smell after hard driving or repeated hill starts.
• Judder as you pull away, which can point at the flywheel rather than the plate.
• Difficulty selecting gears, which may be the hydraulics rather than the clutch itself.

Some of these have cheaper causes — a failing master or slave cylinder, or a stretched cable on older cars. Worth ruling out before agreeing to a gearbox-out job.

How to tell a fair clutch quote from a padded one

• Ask for parts and labour split out, plus the hours claimed and the hourly rate.
• Check whether a dual mass flywheel is included. It is the single biggest reason two clutch quotes differ, and it is not always needed.
• Ask if the release bearing and concentric slave cylinder are in the kit. Re-using them invites a second gearbox-out job.
• More than about 5.5 hours of labour on a normal front-wheel-drive car needs explaining.
